January 18, 2008, Newsletter Issue #147: National Fallen Firefighters Memorial

Tip of the Week

Work is now underway to create a National Memorial Park in Emmitsburg, Maryland near Frederick, to honor all firefighters. When completed, the National Memorial Park will be the first permanent park in the United States honoring all members of the fire service. The park will include the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial designated by Congress in 1990 as the official monument to all fallen firefighters. Plaques around the monument bear the names of over 2,000 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1981.

The park features a brick "Walk of Honor" that will connect the monument, the historic Fallen Firefighters Memorial Chapel, and memorial plazas. Each brick on the walkway will bear a personal inscription. The first section of the walkway is now in place. Proceeds from the sale of these bricks are helping to finance construction of the Park.
